A Brief History of Wordsworth Editions
Often we are asked how we are able to offer such high quality books at such low prices. The answer is that we are a small family business, with rather old-fashioned values. We do not have corporate headquarters or a massive marketing budget, and this helps us to achieve our ultimate aim: making classic fiction and non-fiction books available at an affordable price, but without any compromise on quality.
Wordsworth Editions was established in 1987, but achieved a very high profile with the launch of the £1 Classic paperback in 1992. The media coverage was considerable - could we produce such high quality books for a fraction of the price charged by leading publishers for the same titles? In the following years, many publishers, both large and small, have tried to copy our successful formula, but none have succeeded.
Nearly twenty years later, our Adult Classics and Children's Classics still cost only £1.99. Our range of nearly 500 titles now includes World Literature, Poetry, Reference and Mystery & Supernatural titles, together with large format Special Editions, plus high quality hardback books in our Library Collection series, all at prices offering unbeatable value for money.
We should also mention the Introductions and Notes included in the vast majority of our Adult Classics and World Literature series. Written by leading academics, these are invaluable for students, and fascinating for the general reader. The high quality and low price of our books make them ideal for anyone on a tight budget.
We are constantly looking at ways to improve our books, whether it be through additional content or a better quality finish, but without any increase in prices - proof indeed that Wordsworth truly believes in offering true value over profits.
