The Return of Sexton Blake!
Sexton Blake, the fictional detective, is one of the most written about characters in the English language. Published in papers, magazines and comics, and appearing in stage plays, radio dramas, films and television serials, the Sexton Blake adventures appeared from 1893 to 1978, running to over 5000 stories by some 200 authors.
The first Sexton Blake story was ‘The Missing Millionaire’, which appeared in the penny dreadful ‘The Halfpenny Marvel’ on 20th December 1893, written by Harry Blyth (under the pen-name Hal Meredeth). Only a handful of the Sexton Blake stories were written by Meredeth, as the nine guinea fee for his first story included payment for the copyright of the character!
Sexton Blake faced a number of memorable villains over the years, many of whom became almost as well known as the detective himself - such as Waldo the Wonderman, Zenith the Albino, Leon Kestrel and George Marsden Plummer.
Wordsworth is pleased to announce that agreement has been reached with the owners of the rights of the character, IPC Media, to publish a collection of some of the best stories, which will be published under the title ‘The Casebook of Sexton Blake’ in March 2009.
